Users Stopping Slimming Injections Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People buying these treatments must be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication report a intense return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become starving," said a patient.

This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
