European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
