Christantus Uche Ignites Dominant Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Even though entering their first-ever European campaign, Crystal Palace are adapting very quickly. Without key players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a commanding win that virtually guarantees them a place in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
Another three points in their upcoming fixture against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight passage to the last 16, particularly following a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Opportunity
This match provided a platform for some of Palace's fringe players to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning after arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a clinical goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, scoring for the second game in match.
A Shelbourne side that had concluded their league season proved no match against a largely rotated Palace lineup. The visitors were further depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Start
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A flowing move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close soon after, fizzing a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the official dismissed the appeals.
The formerArsenal man didn't need to wait long to get his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's shot had struck the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for a couple of robust tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Contest
The match was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some comically weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring with his first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then blazed a glaring chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his senior debut, capping an otherwise positive evening for the visiting side.
