Chelsea Boss Maresca Dismisses Man City Links as Pure Gossip
Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca has labelled recent reports connecting him with a return to Manchester City as nothing but hearsay.
The Italian manager, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's assistant in Manchester, responded to the ongoing speculation about his next move.
Maresca, appointed Chelsea boss in the summer of 2024, has a contract running through the end of the decade, with a potential extra year option.
"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is completely unfounded," Maresca said. "And at this moment, there is little room for such distractions."
He further elaborated, "First of all, because I have a contract here until 2029. And my focus, I have stated many times, is solely on this club and I'm honoured to be here. But again, it's rumour. One week ago I was connected to a role in Italy with Juventus. So I ignore it because I know that is without foundation."
Chelsea, currently sitting fourth in the Premier League, are scheduled to face Newcastle United on Saturday in a 12:30 GMT fixture.
Strain After Previous Comments
Maresca's latest comments follow after he described a previous 48-hour period as his "worst" since arriving at Chelsea.
Those initial words had sparked considerable talk of a possible disagreement between the coach and the club's ownership hierarchy.
When pressed if he had discussed matters with the club's sporting directors, Maresca responded, "We are in the same facility, so we speak about different things. But about the Everton media session, no."
The Italian did confirm he would definitely stay at the club for the coming campaign and urged the fans to keep backing the team".
In more positive news, Maresca indicated that injured attackers Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could be back sooner than expected, potentially available for a match against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Perspective: Unresolved Tension
The apparent strain between Maresca and the Chelsea board remains as an open wound that continues to cause concern.
While there has been no deepening of the matter publicly, there has equally been no apology forthcoming, leaving the matter unresolved.
The atmosphere during the manager's press conferences has grown notably awkward, leading to concerns it could undermine what has up to now been a promising start to the season.
Chelsea's sporting situation is strong: they are in the top four in the league, have reached the Carabao Cup semi-finals, and can achieve a favourable European position with strong performances in their final games.
