A minimum of 13 individuals killed and ninety-eight wounded in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, defying forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
